How to care for your kitchen units

With a little care, you’ll be able to keep your kitchen units looking as good as new. Your cleaning routine will vary depending on your unit’s finish. Find your finish then follow these top tips.

Silk finish

To keep the doors clean, use a soft microfibre cloth and warm, soapy water. For a build-up of grease and dirt you may need to use a degreaser. Spray the degreaser on to your clean cloth and wipe in firm, circular motions until removed. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cotton cloth.

Matt finish

Wipe down with a soft microfibre cloth and warm, soapy water. Dry with a separate clean, soft cloth. Be gentle with painted cabinets to avoid damaging the finish.

sq3

Glass

If you have units with glass doors, the best way to look after these is to clean them gently with a glass cleaning spray and soft microfibre cloth.

sq2

High gloss

Keep doors and drawers clean by wiping with a non-abrasive cloth and warm, soapy water. Dry thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth, towel or absorbent kitchen paper. If you find that soapy water leaves streaks, then use a glass cleaning spray before drying with a soft microfibre cloth.

    What to do

There’s no need for expensive cleaning products, all you need is diluted washing-up liquid and a damp, soft microfibre cloth to wipe down the worktop.

If you spill something on your worktop, remove as soon as possible, especially if it’s near a join.

    Caution

Always check that a cleaning product is suitable for the surface you’ve chosen. Avoid cleaning products that contain bleach, solvents or any type of citrus juice such as lemon. Don’t leave cleaning products to soak into any surface or cabinet finish and avoid using abrasive sponges or cloths.

    quartz worktops

How to care for your quartz worktop

Between prepping meals and displaying beautiful accessories, your worktop is one of the hardest working - and most visible - areas of your kitchen. Quartz is a hard-wearing and low-maintenance choice but still needs some effort to keep it looking as good as new.

    Routine cleaning

To keep your worktop in pristine condition always remove and clean spillages such as tea, coffee, wine, vinegar, fruit juice or cooking sauces, as soon as possible.

It’s far easier to clean quartz worktop spills when they happen, before they dry and potentially become stubborn. To clean, use a damp, non-abrasive cloth and if needed, a small amount of specialist worktop cleaner. Rinse thoroughly with water to remove any residue and dry immediately with paper or cloth towels. For best results, buff in smooth circular motions with a lint-free microfibre cloth.

Avoid multi-surface polishes on the worktop as these can affect the appearance of the finish. Any water spillages should be wiped up and dried immediately with paper or cloth towels to prevent a build-up of limescale.
Glass cleaner can be used as part of your worktop cleaning routine.

Oils and dyes capable of staining can be found in common foods such as curry or butter. Don’t let spillages from these food types remain on your worktop. Clean up straight away using the previous tips.

    Products to avoid

Stay away from stripping agents, grease removers, caustic soda or products that have a PH value above 10 when you clean your quartz worktop. Don’t use solvents that contain methylene chloride, dichloromethane or chloromethane. Oils, chemicals, dyes and solvents can permanently damage your worktop. If you do spill any of these types of products on your worktop, wipe away immediately and rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue. Dry with paper or cloth towels. For best results buff in gentle circular motions with a lint-free microfibre cloth.

    Heavy & sharp objects

Do not stand, sit or place heavy objects onto the surface and avoid dropping or knocking objects that can cause damage to the surface or edge of your worktop.

Never cut directly onto a surface and always use a chopping board when preparing food.

    Hot objects

Whilst your quartz worktop is heat resistant, it’s not heat proof. To avoid thermal impact damage, you shouldn’t place hot items directly on to the worktop. Heat trivets must be used when placing hot pans or similar items onto the surface.

    sinks

How to care for your sink

Sinks are constantly exposed to water, detergents and heavy use. Follow these simple and effective guidelines to keep your sink in perfect condition.

    What to do

If you live in a hard water area, limescale deposits can build up on your sink over time. The limescale can become coloured by liquids such as coffee or red wine. We recommend using lemon juice or vinegar to remove stains and residue. Simply apply, leave for a few minutes, wipe with a cloth and rinse away with water. Always dry your sink after use to help prevent limescale build-up.

    coution-icon

    Caution

Don’t chop food directly on the sink surface as this can cause damage, always use a chopping board.

Avoid pouring strong chemicals down the sink such as bleach, ammonia, caustic soda, white spirit and sterilising solutions. If this does happen, wipe the spill away quickly and rinse with plenty of clean, warm water.

We don’t recommend using a plastic washing up bowl because this can lead to particles of grit underneath that scratch the sink’s surface.

Take care not to drop sharp or heavy objects onto the sink as this may chip, scratch or crack the surface.

How to care for the rest of your kitchen

Whether it’s fingerprints on handles or limescale build-up on taps, everyday use can quickly take the shine off your new kitchen.
Follow these simple kitchen cleaning tips to keep your appliances, accessories and taps looking their best.

    Taps

Like sinks, taps are in daily contact with water and need cleaning to stop a build-up of limescale. Rub the surface of the tap dry after use to stop any build-up. If limescale does form, use lemon juice or vinegar to remove this. Just apply, leave for a few minutes, wipe with a cloth and rinse away with clean water. Avoid scrubbing with anything abrasive, as this can scratch and damage your tap.

    Handles

The handles of your kitchen are always in use and can quickly become grubby. It’s a good idea to regularly wipe down handles on your cabinet doors and drawers. Use a soft microfibre cloth and warm, soapy water, drying thoroughly afterwards.
